Vanadium Ill Chloride 25g
Lead Time: 2-3 Weeks
Vanadium(III) chloride (VCl3) is primarily used as a catalyst in organic synthesis reactions, particularly for processes like the cleavage of acetonide groups, and is also employed as a key component in redox flow batteries due to its ability to undergo redox reactions between different oxidation states of vanadium; it can also be used as a reducing agent in analytical chemistry to determine nitrate and nitrite concentrations in water samples.

Key applications of Vanadium(III) chloride:
  • Catalysis in organic synthesis:
VCl3 acts as a mild Lewis acid catalyst in various organic reactions, including the synthesis of dihydropyrimidinones, coumarins, and facilitating chemoselective deprotection of acetonides.

  • Redox flow batteries:
Solutions of VCl3 in sulfuric acid are used as electrolytes in vanadium redox flow batteries, which are highly scalable energy storage systems.

  • Analytical chemistry:
Vanadium(III) chloride can be used as a reducing agent to determine the concentration of nitrate and nitrite ions in water samples.

  • Material science:
Research is ongoing to explore the potential of vanadium-based materials, including those derived from VCl3, for applications in high-performance alloys and superconductors.

Important points to remember:
  • Highly reactive:
Vanadium(III) chloride is a corrosive and toxic substance, requiring careful handling and appropriate safety measures.

  • Oxidation state:
The “III” in Vanadium(III) chloride indicates that the vanadium atom is in the +3 oxidation state.
